- Of
the 25,000 who die each yeah, in the U.S., in drunk driving accidents, 4,000 of
those victims are teenagers. This
means that 11 teenagers die each day in drunk driving accidents.
- In
Sanilac County, surveyed teenagers 16-19 year olds reported driving while
drinking or using drugs, (4.8% of 16 yr. Olds, 5.0% of 17 yr. Olds, 10.2% of 18
yr. Olds and 14.2% of 19 yr. Olds).
- In
Sanilac County, teenagers in grades 7-12, report weekly or more frequent usage
of the following substances: 30.3%
drink beer/wine coolers, 18.2% drink hard liquor, 7.5% use marijuana, 4.6% use
other drugs (inhalants, speed, LSD, etc.) 1% report use of cocaine.
- Steroid
use can cause an increase in blood pressure and cholesterol which is associated
with coronary heart disease, strokes and early death.
- Steroid
use is addictive.
- There
are 61 chemicals found in marijuana. THC,
the psychoactive ingredient of the plant, is found in varying amounts in all
parts of the plant except roots and seeds.
- Marijuana
use can increase heart rate up to 90 beats/minute above its normal rate, causing
reddening (bloodshot) eyes for several hours, and increase blood pressure.
- Inhalents
such as “RUSH” dilates the arteries supplying the brain, causing a
pronounced pounding or throbbing sensation. This can cause fatalities from cardiac arrhythmias, long
lasting brain damage and liver damage.
- “Crack”
cocaine use can cause loss of weight, skin problems, convulsions, stroke, heart
attack, and difficulty in breathing.
- In
Sanilac County, of teenagers in grades 7-12, 13.3% stated they needed counseling
and/or information for alcohol problems, 13.6% stated they needed counseling
and/or information for drug problems and 21.6% stated they needed information on
dealing with peer pressure.
